Subject: Installing and Patching Battlefield 2 on Windows 7

So I'm sharing my installation experience with you guys (and my future self) so if you run into similar problems, this thread might help to fix it.

1. Installing Battlefield 2
Installation went a little dodgy, after the microphone settings a message popped up with "Installation Complete", and the installer never quit. So I forced it to quit.

The problem:
After installation I could not start the game, the .dll file d3dx9_25.dll could not be found. It was a problem with DirectX9 BF2 should have installed correctly.

The Fix:
1.1 Navigate to the /directx folder on the BF2 CD/DVD
1.2 Open the file: Apr2005_d3dx9_25_x86.cab or Apr2005_d3dx9_25_x64.cab
(files vary based on an x86 or 64bit system)
1.3 Copy the compressed file called d3dx9_25.dll to the /EA Games/Battlefield 2/ folder.
(Normal copy/paste results in acces dienied, so drag to desktop, then drag to folder)
1.4 Open the file Feb2005_d3dx9_24_x86.cab or Feb2005_d3dx9_24_x64.cab
(files vary based on an x86 or 64bit system)
1.5 Copy the compressed file called d3dx9_24.dll to the /games/Battlefield 2/ folder.

Tested the game, started up, logged in .. worked fine.

2. Patching 1.41
I downloaded the full patch 1.41 from Gamershell(536.01MB)
Extracted bf2_patch_1.41.exe to desktop, and clicked on run as administrator, you know .. just to be safe.
Takes a few seconds before the Installshield Wizard pops up, select country, click next.

The Problem:
Can't find install folder for Battlefield 2(TM)

I Googled and went on to try a manual patch, that didn't work at all ..
Rebooted the PC, tried to uninstall the game.

The Problem:

The Fix:
Manually uninstall BF2.

2.1 C > program files > EA games > there you find the battlefield 2 folder. Remove this.
2.2 Navigate to my documents folder and in there you will find a folder called battlefiled 2. Remove this folder.
2.3 Go into the registry (Start > Run > and type regedit.
2.4 Expand the tab HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then expand the Software tab, find the Electronic Arts folder and expand that folder. Open the ea games tab there you see battlefield 2 listed. Delete that entry.
2.5 Close the ea games tab and look for anouther tab called DICE in there you should see battlefield 2(TM) also remove this entry.
2.6 Expand Microsoft, Windows then currentversion then uninstall battlefields entry "{04858915-9F49-4B2A-AED4-DC49A7DE6A7B}"

Rebooted the PC, back to step 1, Ready for a Fresh Install.

The Fix:
Aha! So I had to quit the Autorun Installation when installing BF2, Find the Install on the disk and run as administrator. This time the installation went smoothly.

New patching attempt, Run as administrator .. Patching!

3. Patching 1.50
Downloaded the patch from Gamershell
Patched quickly, without problems!

Nice post Scopey!

I didn't had those problems installing and patching BF2, but maybe I already chose for the manual 'as administrator' install. Dunno anymore, it's a while ago I installed it.
For the Punkbuster install and update I did had problems that I got kicked out of servers because PB had problems connecting. I recall that I also had to install PB again but had to make sure that I did the install and update checking with the 'run as administrator' option.

That should do the trick for alot of problems you could have when installing stuff on Windows 7.

Patching to 1.50 went quickly, no problems.
To manually install Punkbuster on Windows 7.

1. Download Punkbuster.
2. Installed with administrator rights.
3. The Punkbuster menu appeared, I clicked add game, Selected Battlefield 2.
4. Clicked "Check for updates"
5. Updated!

All took me 2 minutes, I might check out this evening if there are any problems.
Now it's time for some more homework
